Why do manufacturers need CMMC?+
Manufacturers in the defense supply chain receive Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)—drawings, specs, and technical data—flowed down from primes under DFARS 252.204-7012. CMMC Level 2 verifies the 110 NIST SP 800-171 controls that protect that information. In July 2026 the DoD suspended CMMC Phase 2, pausing the third-party certification milestone pending a review, but the underlying DFARS safeguarding and self-assessment obligations remain in force.
What is CUI flow-down?+
When a prime contractor wins DoD work involving CUI, the security obligation flows down through the supply chain to subcontractors and suppliers who touch that data. A small machine shop making parts from a controlled drawing inherits the same protection requirements as the prime—often without the same resources.
